Fusion Shuts Down Opposition at PDA Tournament: May 2008
By ANGELA MOUNTAIN The Intelligencer The FC Bucks Fusion U16 girls came to the 2008 PDA Invitational Premier Elite college showcase prepared to play, and they left with the proof of their determination — four shutouts, 14 goals in four games and the division championship. The showcase, one of the top-ranked tournaments in the country and drawing more than 300 college coaches, pitted the Fusion against teams from Maryland, New Jersey and New York in the U16 Blue division. FC Bucks earned the maximum number of points possible. The Fusion began the tournament with a 3-0 blanking of Oceanside Power (Md.) off goals from Madison Clemens, Tierney Carabba and Chelsea Czarnnik. Janine Valerio earned the assist on Carabba’s goal, and junior defender Julia Goldsworthy, who has made a verbal commitment to play at Virginia Tech, assisted on Czarnik’s score. FC Bucks dominated the NJSA Fury (N.J.) in a 4-0 win. Valerio’s hat trick led the scoring, including two goals off passes from Goldsworthy and another from Carabba’s assist. Sarah Senoyuit put the game out of reach off a nice pass from midfielder Susie Trezza. Outstanding performances were turned in by Julia Gomes, Kaitlyn Schultz and Brittany MacDonald. On the second day of competition, the Fusion began with a 4-0 shutout of Academica (N.Y.), taking a quick lead when Kerriann McGettigan struck an amazing free kick from outside the 18-yard line. Senoyuit added another point, scoring on a penalty kick. Once again, Carabba found Valerio in front of the net, and Emily Irons capped off the scoring. In the title game, the Fusion faced Freestate Phoenix (Md.), coming through with a 3-0 win. Irons scored off an assist from defender Melanie Keer to put FC Bucks on the board just before halftime. In the second half, McGettigan found the net once again, and Megan Campbell clinched the win with a fabulous penalty kick. In goal for the Fusion, Nicole Ulrick proved to be one of the top goalies in the Premier league. Contact Angela Mountain at amountain@phillyburbs.com
